SANDRA LEA AKKERMAN was born on March 20, 1964 to Harold “Bud” and Shirley (Enninga) Frey in Adrian, Minnesota. At the age of 5 she moved with her family to Luverne, Minnesota where she participated in 4H and choir during her school years. She attended Luverne Elementary and High School, graduating in 1982. She also attended beautician school for hairstyling. On September 4, 1993 she was united in marriage to Bradly Akkerman and the two moved to Motley, Minnesota for a short time before returning to Luverne in 1994. Later that same year their marriage was blessed by the birth of their daughter, Presley. Through the years Sandy worked at the bank in Luverne, helping distribute student loans for school. She continued to live in Luverne until her untimely death in her home on Thursday, October 10, 2019 at the age of 55 years, six months, and 20 days. Sandy was an animal lover through and through, whether it was horses in 4H in her younger years, or cats throughout her entire life. She loved being with and around those creatures; they brought her so much joy and happiness. She was also a huge fan of Elvis Presley; she could listen to his music all day and never tire of hearing it. Most of all, though, Sandy loved her family and spending time with them, they were the greatest joy in her life. Sandy is lovingly remembered by her husband, Brad of Luverne; her daughter, Presley Jean Akkerman of Rapid City, South Dakota; her mother, Shirley Frey of Luverne; her siblings, Kenny Frey of Brandon, South Dakota, Barbara Compton of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Larry (Carrie) Frey of Luverne, and Bob Frey of Luverne; her mother-in-law, Mary Akkerman; father-in-law, Arnie (Sara) Akkerman; and brother- and sisters-in-law, Mike Akkerman, Iva Akkerman, and Meredith Eaton. She was preceded in death by her father, Harold; her brother-in-law, Lyn Compton; two nephews, Eric Compton and Joshua Frey; and one grand-niece, Kylie Compton.
