Chatham, Frances Hallam Hurt, age 99, died on Friday February 6, 2015 at her home on Halifax Road in Chatham. Mrs. Hurt was born December 28, 1915, in Graham, Texas to the late Robert Gaston Hallam and the late Mary Taylor Hallam. Her husband, Henry C. Hurt, Sr., died more than 40 years ago. Mrs. Hurt is survived by their daughter, Dr. Hallam Hurt and husband Steve Roth of Philadelphia, and Henry C. Hurt, Jr. and wife Margaret, of Chatham. Her four grandchildren include Hallam Roth Harper and husband Justin of Philadelphia, Elizabeth Hurt of Charlottesville, Charles Hurt and wife Stephanie of Washington and Robert Hurt and wife Kathy of Chatham. In addition to six great-grandchildren, Mrs. Hurt is survived by four nephews and a niece and their sons and daughters. A more complete obituary will appear later, noting Mrs. Hurt’s wide work in civic and cultural affairs throughout the region and the state. A funeral service is scheduled for 2 pm Monday at Chatham Presbyterian Church with interment at Chatham Burial Park. The Reverend Mikel Pugh will be in charge. The family will receive friends at the Chatham Train Station on Depot Street between 4 and 6 pm on Sunday, February 8, Mrs. Hurt had worked hard with others on the restoration of the train station. At other times, the family will receive friends at her home on Halifax Road. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the Pittsylvania Historical Society or the Chatham Presbyterian Church.
