Duane "Duke" Maloney Obituary

Duane J “DUKE” Maloney, Sr., age 78, of Long Beach, MS passed away at MHG in Gulfport, MS on Saturday, September 28, 2019. Duke was born in Peoria, IL on October 29, 1940. At the age of seven he and his parents moved to Mississippi and made their home on 28th St. He has been a resident of Long Beach ever since. Duke attended Long Beach High and was #75 on the varsity football team in his senior year, graduating in 1959. He was preceded in death by his parents, Tom and Grace Maloney; his two beloved sons, Duane J Maloney, Jr and Donald Thomas Maloney all of Long Beach; and his step-grandson, Kelly McCabe of California. He is survived by his 3 stepchildren, Mickey Sessum, Diane and Jimmy Johnson, Paul and Beth Sessum; his grandchildren, Heather Maloney Harvey and Misty Wilson, Greg Sessum and Naomi Sessum Albert, Sarah Johnson Allen and Hannah Johnson Brupbacher; his great grandsons Jacob and Darran Harvey,as well as Greg’s children and Naomi’s son, Daniel. He is also survived by his longtime girlfriend, Mariann Clayburg and his loyal friend, Kay Randolph. In the 1960’s he worked at Pass Christian Industries, ‘the shirt factory’, as a floor supervisor. Later, he worked at Reichold Chemical in Gulfport. Duke’s family and friends knew that he liked to garden and grow things, planting beautiful trees in the yard of his boyhood home. In his younger days, he was in a bowling league, loved to shoot pool with his buddies, took dancing lessons at Arthur Murray’s Studio and worked hard to provide for five growing children. Later, he became a collector of tattoos, becoming ‘the illustrated man’. A longtime friend recently said, “There is only one way to describe the Duke; he was way cool.” And he most certainly was. He was a good natured man with a big heart and a gentle soul, easy to love, and a good friend to many. His laugh and his face will be remembered and missed by those who love him.
