Kathryn Luoma

Toivola Kathryn Mae (Leonard) Luoma, 66, a resident of Toivola, “Kananen’s Corner”, passed away Tuesday, September 10, 2019, at the Omega House in Houghton. She was born on September 6, 1953, in Hancock, MI, a daughter of the late Irving and Ellen (Kananen) Hirvi. As a child, Kathy was raised in Toivola and attended the Heikkinen School and Jeffers High School. On August 1, 1970, she was united in marriage to Leonard Aaron Luoma. The couple first resided in Wyoming where Leonard was stationed with the United States Air Force. After an overseas deployment, they resided in North Dakota before returned to make their home in Beacon Hill and for the past 40 years in Toivola. Kathy was a member of the South Range Apostolic Lutheran Church. She was an avid reader, enjoyed old country music & driving along Lake Superior. She always talked about growing up with her best friend Jean (Butch) Honkavaara Fraki. Preceding her in death were her son Jonathan Leonard Luoma, her parents Irving and Ellen Hirvi, brother Howard Hirvi. Surviving are: Her husband: Leonard Luoma Her daughter: Kellie Luoma Her grandchildren: Aaron Luoma, Daline, Chriscoe, & Shane Griffith and their mother Violet Luoma, Leonardo & Tatiana Reyes Luoma. Her brothers and sisters: Joanne (Ernerst) Fraki, Alden (Faye) Hirvi, Ken (Peggy Macko) Hirvi, Edie Paul, Her sister-in-law: Sue Hirvi Her good friends: Dan and Diane Dahlstrom Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins As requested, no public service for Kathryn will be held. Kathryn’s family would like to thank the staff of the Omega House for the care given to her during her stay. In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, the family suggests memorials be given to the Gerald Viaro fund at the Omega House in memory of Kathryn Luoma.
