George Hilbun Sumrall, III, 72, of Satsuma, AL, passed away on Sunday, September 8, 2019. He was born June 8, 1947 in Mobile, AL. At an early age, he excelled as a sports pioneer in 1959 when he played short stop on Mobile’s charter Little League all-star team which made it through National playoffs. He did the same as an all-star in Mobile’s first Babe Ruth League. As an all-star quarterback at Semmes High School during the 1960’s era of the legendary Coach Charles Leverett, he honed the grit and perseverance that carried him through life. Mr. Sumrall’s persuasive personality evident even during elementary grades at Greystone Christian Elementary School, served him well in real estate and insurance sales in Mobile and Miami. His love of sports continued by coaching his daughter in girls’ softball in the 1980’s and becoming a devoted fan at his grandchildren’s sporting events. He was preceded in death by his father George Hilbun Sumrall, Jr., step-father Marion G. Ezernack, step-mother Zellene Sumrall, and step-brother Michael Griffin. He is survived by his mother Edwina Gates Ezernack (93), brother, Michael Kent Sumrall, half-brother Scott Sumrall, daughters, Kristie Lynn Sumrall Threlkeld, Sandy Smith Schilke, step-daughters, Maria Robinson and Stephanie Scott, grandsons, Dustin Blake Threlkeld and Cody Ryan Threlkeld, granddaughter Kelsey Lauren Threlkeld, companion Sheila Lee Williams and many other family members. Pallbearers: Brent Gates, Derek Gates, Cole Havard, David Leach, Braxton Myers and Scott Whitten. Honorary Pallbearers: Don Wilson and Jack Tillman. Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 12, 2019, from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 pm followed directly by the funeral at 1:00 p.m. Services and funeral will be held at Forest Lawn Funeral Home and Cemetery, 9700 Celeste Rd., Saraland, AL 36571.
