Shelby was born in Collingwood on September 30th, 1994. Shelby grew up in Stayner and later moved to Singhampton. She attended Collingwood Collegiate Institute and completed her Undergraduate degree at Nipissing University. She was 4 days away from defending her Master’s thesis on Environmental Stress in Relation to Athlete Performance and earning her Masters Degree of Human Physiology at Nipissing. From a very young age, Shelby was a devoted cross country skier. Throughout her entire life, she spent countless hours in all seasons on Highlands Nordic’s trails. The time spent here helped whet her competitive appetite and she began racing on Highlands Trailblazer’s team at a young age. In high school, she competed as a strong member of the C.C.I. Nordic Ski team and had great success at the OFSAA championships she attended. Shelby was a varsity athlete on the Lakers Nordic Ski Team at Nipissing University where she had many accomplishments at the provincial, national and international levels. A highlight of her university ski career was representing Canada at the World University Games in Kazakhstan. Shelby respected all of her coaches from each level of her competing, but had particular regard for her Nipissing coaches of 6 years Toivo Koivukoski and Dr. Geoffry Hartley, who helped her through the duration of her masters. Aside from her athletic accomplishments, Shelby earned a highly esteemed reputation in the ski community. She piloted a number of university ski camps and coached at countless other camps for younger athletes. Shelby had a generous heart and was always willing to lend a hand when needed. She would never back down from a challenge and met everything she did with full commitment and determination to be the best version of herself. Those who met her were immediately drawn to her positive spirit. She was quick to laugh and always looking on the bright side. She was a fierce friend who would go above and beyond for her friends and family. Shelby was a free spirit with a drive to travel. She had a zest for life that was expressed through her work, training, personal life and travel. She had a passion for travel and particularly loved the two summers she spent working in New Zealand. Shelby was an inspiration to her teammates, friends and family and she is so missed by all who knew her.
