Kristin DeVoto, passed on Dec. 12, 2015, after a courageous and decades long battle with MS. She was born June 1, 1945, in Modesto to Robert Charles Devoto and Betty Marie (Leslie) Devoto. After Robert passed away, Betty married Alfred Leo Wanger Sr., who became a much loved father to Kris. Kris graduated from Vallejo High School in 1963. Shortly after graduation, she married and later divorced, Gerald Robert Holzapple Sr., with whom she had five children. Being a strong independent woman stood supreme as one of Kris’ characteristics. In order to support herself and her children, Kris gained employment with the Solano County Court System as an entry level clerk. Kris turned the job into a successful career and after 29 years she retired holding the position of senior courtroom clerk. Kris was held in high esteem by Judges, lawyers and other Solano County officials. She is survived by co-workers who are among her closest friends. Among Kris’ passions was a fast car she called Punkin. This bright orange, ‘75, Chevy Corvette reigned supreme as Kris’s pride, joy and mode of transportation for many years. Punkin brought to light her talent for sweet talking her way out of speeding tickets and the ability to stuff her five children into a vehicle with only 2 seats. A ‘56 Chevy Nomad was another favorite car owned and loved by Kris. Kris’ love for speed of anything with four tires and a big block was fed by watching NASCAR races long after she became unable to drive. She was a huge fan of and lived vicariously through NASCAR driver, Jeff Gordon. Kris had a vast and diverse knowledge of many things. This quality played out by answering correctly and with lightning speed, any question that Jeopardy host Alex Trebek read to contestants. She always followed her answers with, “I could have won that money.” Crossword puzzles were no match for Kris either. She completed daily puzzles with mensa-like intelligence. Kris is regarded by family and friends as a force to be reckoned with when playing board games, particularly those that required the ability to not only spell a word, but know the definition of that word. The list of people she decimated during a “friendly” game of Scrabble is both impressive and quite lengthy. Kris can be summed up by saying… She was a woman of excellence. Kris loved music about as much as she loved the Vette. Foreigner, Journey, Bob Seger and Janis Joplin topped the list of artists who “Rocked” Kris’ world. However, there was no one who held a brighter candle for her than Sir Elton John and his litany of songs. The person Kris was cannot be journaled in the short space of an obituary. Her passion for playing softball in her younger years to collecting angels, her favorite color purple, to swirling grandchildren around on her motorized chair are just few tidbits that will be recalled in the years to come. She will always be loved and remembered by family and friends. Kris is survived by her mother, Betty Wanger; former husband, Gerald Holzapple Sr. (w. Bridgette); sons and daughters, Tim Holzapple (w. Candy), Lindsey Holzapple (w. Darlene), Gerry Holzapple, Jr. (w. Jill), Karin Dainard and Kristen Perry; sisters and brother, Karin Devoto (H. William Butt), Mary Braby and Alfred Leo Wanger Jr. (w. Lynn Nakashima); 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren. Kris was preceded in death by her fathers Robert and Al; sister, Janet McCamish.
