Shirley Ann Flaskegaard Obituary

Shirley Ann (Wing) Flaskegaard was born on May 26, 1929 in Parkersburg, Iowa to the late Claude R. Wing and Agnes E. Johnson Wing. She attended schools in Parkersburg, Iowa, Worthington, Minnesota and Manson, Iowa; graduating with the Class of 1947. Shirley was baptized in Parkersburg, Iowa and later confirmed in 1941 at the First United Methodist Church in Worthington. On November 18, 1951, she was united in marriage to Robert O. Flaskegaard at the First United Methodist Church in Windom. They farmed for a number of years before his death on August 23, 1970. They became parents of two sons, Dean and Gary and grandparents to Nathan and David. Shirley worked for Dr. R.W. Boelter as an optometrist assistant and at the Community First National Bank Agency before retiring in 1991. After retiring, Shirley did volunteer work for RSVP activities at the Windom Senior Center, was the Meals on Wheels Coordinator for the First United Methodist Church in Windom for a number of years, active in Bone Builders and loved being out in her yard. Recently, Shirley’s health had been declining and she was placed in hospice care and passed away on December 11, 2015, at the Good Samaritan Society-Sogge Memorial in Windom at the age of 86. Shirley was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church in Windom where she was head usher from 1987-1991 and helped with the attendance record for many years. She was also a member of the Windom Area Senior Center where she was president, vice-president and treasurer. Shirley will be remembered for her knack in straightening eye glasses and her whistle. In 2003, she was awarded the Mayor’s Medal of Honor for “Service by the Elderly”. Shirley is survived by her two sons, Dean Flaskegaard of Lakewood, WA; Gary Flaskegaard of Virginia Beach, VA; two grandsons, Nathan and David; sisters-in-law, Madonna Wing of Worthington and Dorothy Flaskegaard of Arizona special friend, Gladys Polzin of Windom; and several nieces and nephews. Shirley is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert Flaskegaard; three brothers, Harlan, Eugene and Don; nephews, Tom, Steve, and Brad Wing; nieces, Donna Jean Wing, Margaret Mary, and Jan Wing; and sisters-in-law, Harriet Wing, and Beverly.
