Hershel Ray White Obituary

Hershel Ray White, age 76 of Danville, passed away Friday, December 11, 2015 at 11:44 am after a short courageous battle with Lymphoma at home with family by his side. He was born August 19, 1939 in Danville the son of James C and Susan B (Hashman) White. While working at Teepak he met the love of his life, Charlotte Ann White and they were wed on December 12, 1969. Hershel will be sadly missed by his daughter, Chris (Mark) Foote of Danville, Sons, Jack (Tina) Divan and Travis (Erin) White of Danville, 5 grandchildren, Ryan and Micheal (Jill) Poggendorf, Travis and Caleb White and Jarrett Divan, , 4 great grandchildren, Michael and Evan Poggendorf, Maddy and Elli Poggendorf, 4 Step Grandchildren, 5 Step Great Grandchildren, Brothers, Charles (Carol) White of Ft. Pierce, Florida, George (Betty) White, Albert White, Bill White all of Danville, Sisters, Nancy Hardy and Linda White both of Danville. Hershel leaves behind many nieces and nephews, and longtime friends, Bob and Judy Smith of Danville, whom he spoke fondly of and considered family. Hershel was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, Charlotte, parents, brothers, Henry, Bob, Carl, Jerry, Sister Mary Peterson and great granddaughter, Isabella Poggendorf. Hershel was born in the Vermilion Heights near the Parle St. area. He grew up on South Logan and had a fondness for the life along the river. He would often tell stories of the antics him and his brothers would get into, and with the White family trait, he would laugh until he cried. He would often talk of his small jobs he would do for Mrs. Fairhall and how well she treated him. Hershel graduated from Danville High School in 1958 and joined the US Army soon after, doing basic training at Fort Leonard Wood Missouri. Soon after he took a train to New York and headed to Verdun France. Hershel spent time in Verdun building bridges and loved to tell stories of his time spent there and all his Army buddies. He was reunited with one of his Army buddies, Bill Godsell, at his surprise party honoring his 75th Birthday in August of 2014. Hershel returned from France in 1962 and was honorably discharged thereafter. Hershel retired from Teepak after ¬¬¬¬38 years of service. Hershel loved to go on camping and boating trips with the kids while they were growing up. After retiring from Teepak, Hershel could be found taking care of the ground he owned on South Logan along the Vermilion River with his son Travis, and grandsons Travis and Caleb. Together they spent numerous hours making the area one of “Danville’s best kept secrets”. He took pride in his land and was always eager to show it off. Hershel would take walks through the woods going from the “Boola to the Point”. If you couldn’t find him at home, you always knew where to look. Hershel enjoyed going to the North Vermilion McDonald’s and having morning coffee with his friends. Hershel was an avid Cubs, Bears and Illini fan. Hershel and Charlotte were always together. You could find them at Flea Markets, Festivals, Rummage Sales and Auctions. He loved to collect Daisy BB Guns and other various items. Hershel liked to work in his garden, do home repair projects, walking in the woods, mushroom hunting and being with family. Hershel looked forward to the annual get together at the property at the river. He loved seeing everyone together and having fun. Hershel had a knack for telling jokes. Hershel loved country music, especially George Jones and Mac Wiseman. A special thank you to Connie Ford, Jennifer Wilson, Carle Hospice in Danville and niece Angel White for the wonderful care they provided to Hershel. A Celebration of Hershel’s Life will be held on Tuesday December 15, 2015 at 1:30 pm at Sunset Funeral home, Danville. Pastor Scott McCurdy will officiate. He will be laid to rest in Sunset Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 3pm-7pm on Monday December 14, 2015 at the funeral home.
