Martha Munneke

Martha Munneke, 92, of Platte, SD passed away Saturday, August 24, 2019 at Platte Care Center Avera. Funeral Services are 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, August 28, 2019 at the New Holland Christian Reformed Church. A Committal Service will follow at the New Holland Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5:00 – 7:00 P.M. Tuesday, August 27, 2019 at Mount Funeral Home in Platte with a 7:00 P.M. Prayer Service. Martha (Meyerink) Munneke was born on June 30, 1927 to John and Adriana (Vanden Bos) Meyerink in Mitchell, SD. She grew up and received her education in Charles Mix County, SD. Martha was baptized and later made her Profession of Faith in the Christian Reformed Church in Platte, SD. On January 30, 1946 Martha was united in marriage to Henry A. Munneke, to this union five children were born. They farmed and raised their family in Douglas County, SD, retiring in 1984 to New Holland, SD. In December of 1997 they moved to Platte due to ill health. Martha was a member of the New Holland Christian Reformed Church and Ladies Aid, as well as active in the Harmony Workers and Bible Studies. She enjoyed taking care of her children and grandchildren; also tending to her large gardens and flowers, singing, sewing, embroidering towels and creating blankets for her grandchildren. Martha will always be remembered for her sense of humor and wonderful cooking – especially her bread and fried chicken. Grateful for having shared in Martha’s life: her five children: Alvin (Peggy) Munneke of Stickney, SD, Dianne (Jerry) Neugebauer of Scotland, SD, Shirley (David) Huizenga of Hot Springs, SD, Gorden (Vicki) Munneke of Harrison, SD and Harley (Deborah) Munneke of Rapid City, SD; 19 grandchildren; 29 great grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; three sisters: Lillian Beukelman of Sioux Falls, SD, Adrena (Ed) Van Zee of Newton, IA and Irene Zwagerman of Bozeman, MT; two sisters-in-law: Jean Meyerink of Brandon, SD and Rose Meyerink of Thornton, IL; along with many nieces and nephews. Martha was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Munneke (Feb. 13, 1999); her parents, John and Adriana Meyerink; two sisters: Leona (Ted) Ringling Johnson and Wilma (John) Hasseler; two brothers: Harlow and Bertus Meyerink; a brother-in-law, Dennis Beukelman; and a sister-in-law, Tillie (Joe) Hansum.
