Verkuel N. Eubanks Rockville, Maryland Obituary

Verkuel N. Eubanks

Verkuel N. Eubanks of Rockville, Maryland, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 18, 2018. Verk was born on January 3, 1933, in Lucedale, Mississippi to Floyd Jefferson and Ernestine Cooley Eubanks, the third of seven siblings. After graduating from Rocky Creek High School, where he was captain of the basketball team, he enrolled at Southern Mississippi University in Hattiesburg, where he met his future wife, Mary Anne Hood. After graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree as a math major, he served in the army for three years, being stationed in Germany during the Korean War. After his service in the army, he and Anne were married on March 3, 1956. He took a job in San Diego, where their first son, Michael Wayne, was born. In 1958 he took a job with General Electric at the Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama, where he worked as a mathematician on the Mercury space program. While in Huntsville two more sons were born, Larry Lee and Gregory Latimer. In 1966 Verk was transferred to Bethesda, Maryland to work in GE’s computer systems division, from which he retired in 1986. In retirement he and Anne enjoyed traveling with The Seneca Valley Sugarloafers Volksmarch club, completing walks in all 50 states as well as in Iceland, Ireland, Great Britain, and Germany. Verk loved landscaping and always had the best-looking yard on the street. He was an avid sports fan, particularly of the Redskins, Nationals, Orioles, and University of Maryland basketball. He was a devout Christian, and held many positions at Montrose Baptist Church in Rockville, including Sunday School teacher, chairman of deacons, and chairman of the board for Montrose Christian School. He chaired the building committee that built the Montrose Christian School gymnasium that became the home court of future NBA players Kevin Durant and Greivis Vasquez. The last ten years he and Anne were members of Redland Baptist Church in Derwood, where he served as chairman of the Building and Grounds Committee. Verk always valued education and provided for the schooling not only of his children but also of his grandchildren. His family was his greatest joy, and he best enjoyed the times when the family gathered for holidays and birthday dinners. Verk is survived by his wife, Anne Hood Eubanks; sons Michael (Mickey) Wayne Eubanks, Larry Lee Eubanks and wife Pamela, and Gregory Latimer Eubanks and wife Laura; grandchildren Angela Eubanks Mendelson and husband Eric, Jonathan Eubanks and wife Kathryn, Austin Eubanks, Leanne Eubanks, Haley Eubanks, Evan Eubanks, Jenna Matthews and Nolan Matthews; great-grandchildren Kaihler Johnson, Peyton Eubanks, and Parker Mendelson; a sister, Julia Cloy; two brothers, Ivan Eubanks and Lemuel Eubanks and wife Nita; and numerous nieces and nephews.
