Kenneth E. Brooker of Bloomfield Hills died June 20, 2015. He was 94 years old. Kenneth was born January 19, 1921, in Pittsfield, Massachusetts to Lillian (nee Robair) and Edward Brooker. When Ken was 4 years old, his family moved to the small town of Lebanon, New York. He was one of 17 to graduate in 1938 from the High School, lettering in baseball, basketball and soccer. While on a walk to the post office one day Ken met Eleanor Roosevelt who often visited a friend there. As graduation approached, Ken wrote her asking if she would speak at the graduation. She accepted the invitation and it was quite an event for such a small public school. The family Gulf gas station was destroyed by fire and Ken then had to work his way through college. Ken received his mechanical engineering degree from Iowa State University in 1942. While attending college he waited tables at the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity and worked nights at the University print shop, where he met Mary �Pat�. Together they shared a marriage spanning 67 years. As a new engineer Ken was hired by General Motors, however, he was soon drafted and put into limited service in the United States Army Air Corps, stationed at Wright Field Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio. Ken return to GM and spent his entire career at the GM Engineering Staff retiring in 1981. His work was administrative and he was the executive assistant to four different vice presidents, each having been a chief engineer at a car division. In addition to his responsibilities at the Tech Center and Proving Grounds, he was secretary of two of Alfred Sloan�s committees that were set up after WWII. They were the Engineering Policy Group and the General Technical Committee. Ken was active in GM affairs in Warren. He was Chairman of the Warren Plant Committee, President of the Macomb County Traffic Safety Association, and represented GM on the Engineering Manpower Utilization Committee nationally. Ken founded a Boy Scout explorer post at the Tech Center and was awarded the BSA Silver Backhorn award for putting on the 1978 Scout Show at the Silver Dome. After retirement he was a founder of the Michigan Alzheimer�s Association as well as one at Cape Cod and the Islands back East. Ken enjoyed leading four discussion group presentations years back and for several years was Chairman of the Audio Committee. He also enjoyed golf and bowling. Kenneth is survived by his sons, Jim (Edward) Brooker, Bob (the late Val) Brooker and Richard Brooker. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Bryanna, Zach, Kasey, Robert, Chelsea, and Ginger, 6 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandson. Kenneth is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary �Pat� Brooker. A Memorial Service will be held at Congregational Church of Birmingham, 100 Cranbrook Road, Bloomfield Hills, Sunday, August 16th at 12noon.
