Francis B. "Frank" Drinan Obituary

Passed away on Saturday, August 10, 2019, at Hoyt Nursing and Rehab Centre. He was 87 years old. Francis Barrett Drinan was born on December 26, 1931, in Saginaw, Michigan to the late Francis M. and Helen P. (Barrett) Drinan. He was a 1950 graduate of St. Andrew High School. As a young man, Frank played competitive tennis. In 1952, he won a local championship and continued to play competitively for 12 additional years after graduation. Following high school, Frank attended the University of Michigan - Ann Arbor receiving his Bachelors of Arts in 1954 and his Masters Degree in Law on August 30, 1957. Later that same year, Frank passed the bar exam and was admitted to the State Bar of Michigan. He married the love of his life, Sandra Speer on July 19, 1969, at St. Andrew Catholic Church in Saginaw; she preceded him in death on February 26, 2015. Frank was employed by the Mutual Liability Company until 1959, when he was named an Assistant City Attorney, holding the position until 1964. On October 1, 1964, he joined Smith & Brooker Law Office where he worked for 32 years and also became partner. Frank continued to be of counsel even after his retirement on December 31, 1996. He served as a member of the Board of Appeals on Zoning in 1966, and was elected President of the Board in 1968. In 2008, The Saginaw County Bar Association celebrated his 50th year and the State Bar of Michigan awarded him as a Golden Honoree. Frank was a longtime member of St. Stephen Catholic Church where he actively volunteered as an Eucharistic Minister and as an usher. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #4232 and a member of the Serra Club. Frank and his wife enjoyed their social circles playing bridge, golf, and tennis. Surviving are three brothers-in-law, Robert H. Speer and his wife, Donna, Las Vegas, NV; James O. Speer, San Antonio, FL; David J. Speer and his wife, Tiffany Choy, Menlo Park, CA; sister-in-law, Kathy Ihler. Also surviving are many special nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. He was passionate about spending time with family and friends and will be dearly missed. He was preceded in death by two brothers: James (Dixie) Drinan; Richard Drinan. A funeral liturgy will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, August 19, 2019, at St. Dominic Parish, St. Stephen Catholic Church, 1310 Malzahn. Rev. Fr. Steve Gavit will officiate. Private Rite of Committal will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens. Friends are welcome to visit with the family at the W. L. Case and Company Funeral Chapel, 4480 Mackinaw Road on Sunday from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. A Vigil Service will be held at 7:00 p.m. Sunday evening led by Pastoral Associate Sharon Wahl. Frank will lie in state at the church on Monday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of Mass.
