Ethel Heady

Ethel Alice Heady, 68, of Garden City, Kansas left this earth for her celestial home on August 6, 2019 surrounded by her family after a heroic battle with cancer. Ethel was born August 15, 1950 in Syracuse, Kansas to Frederick and Alice (Showers) Albers. During her childhood she lived in Holly, Colorado, as well as Syracuse, Coolidge, Tribune, Lakin and Garden City, KS. She graduated high school at Garden City High School in 1969 and continued her education at Colorado State University. Ethel married Thomas Von Heady on April 10, 1976 in her family home in Garden City, Kansas. Ethel mothered a number of foster children during their early years of marriage. Tom and Ethel had two children, Kari and Jackie before moving to Newton, Illinois. During Ethel's time in Illinois she worked at H&R Block, the Locust Knoll Farms Feed Mill, and the 4-H Extension office while primarily taking care of her family. Ethel moved back with her family to her hometown of Garden City, Kansas in 2003 and continued working for H&R Block. Over the years Ethel's joy came from surrounding herself with children. She was known for her listening ear, caring heart, her selfless love, and concern for others. She was active in her church and served in various positions. Ethel enjoyed vacationing with her grandchildren, spending time with family and friends, and attending the activities of her grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. Survivors include her husband, Thomas Von Heady, of the home; children, Jackie Heady of Garden City, Kari Otero and husband Isaac of Garden City; brothers Rick Albers and wife Nancy of Utah, Randy Albers and wife Sue of Topeka, Jamie Albers and wife Christie of Syracuse; Sisters Roxie Pitts of Ingalls, Jane Johnson and Husband Don of Garden City; Brother-in-law Perry Smith; Sister-in-law Linda Heady; Her four grandchildren: Kobe, Kaleb, Analeigh, and Adrianna Otero. Ethel is preceded in death by her parents and a sister Ann Smith. Funeral service will be held Monday, August 12, 2019 at 10:00 am at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Public Viewings will be Saturday 1:00-8:00pm and Sunday 12:00-8:00pm at Garnand Funeral Home. A Viewing will also be available at the church from 9:00-9:40am on Monday. Interment to follow the funeral at Valley View Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society and St. Jude's Hospital, both in care of Garnand Funeral Home.
