John Flanders Obituary

John E. “Mr. Flanders” Flanders, 88, of 66 North Main Street, Windsor Locks died Tuesday, August 6, 2019, at St. Francis Hospital. Born in Windsor Locks, the son of the late Cyrus Glenn and Mary C. (Lynskey) Flanders, he was a lifelong resident of the community and was a graduate of St. Mary School, Windsor Locks High School (1948), and AIC in Springfield. Mr. Flanders taught 8th grade American History at Windsor Locks Middle School for 33 years before retiring in 1993. Teaching was John's passion and he spoke fondly of his experiences and former students. He was also a member of the Suffield Country Club, a parishioner of St. Mary's Church, and an Army Veteran of the Korean War. John is survived by his sister, Maureen F. Healy of Martha’s Vineyard, MA, 16 nieces and nephews, and 28 great-nieces and great-nephews. John was predeceased by three brothers, Urban P. Flanders, C. Glenn Flanders, Jr., and Samuel H. Flanders, and his longtime companion, June Steiger. Relatives and friends are welcome to join the family on Monday, August 12, 2019, from 4 pm to 7 pm at the Windsor Locks Funeral Home, 441 Spring St., Windsor Locks. A funeral procession will gather on Tuesday, August 13, 2019, at 10 am at the funeral home for a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 11 am at St. Mary Church. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
