Avis W. Rowan, 94, of Bridgeport, WV, passed away on Tuesday, August 6, 2019 at Clarksburg Nursing and Rehab Center. She was born in Upshur County on March 11, 1925, a daughter of the late Ernest H. and Belvia (Light) Riggleman. She was married to the late Ernest “Pete” Rowan, who preceded her in death on May 1, 1988. In addition to her parents and husband Avis was preceded in death by three brothers: Arnell, Arden, and Robert Riggleman; and two sisters-in-law Beatrice Riggleman and Dorothy Riggleman. Avis is survived by one sister-in-law: Joan Riggleman, as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Avis was a member of the Simpson Creek Baptist Church, Temple Sunday School Class, and Fannie Late Garrett Circle. She was also a 50-year member of Queen Ester Chapter 11 Order of the Eastern Star. Avis was head cashier at the A&P for over 32 years. Per Avis’s request there will be no public visitation or funeral service. A graveside service will be held on Friday, August 9, 2019 at 1pm at the Maplewood Cemetery in Elkins with Rev. Brian Seders presiding.
