Gaylen Forrest Rankin, known lovingly to many as Frosty was born on May 17, 1950, in Paris, Kentucky, and departed this life on July 21, 2026, in Millersburg, Kentucky, leaving behind a legacy as bright and enduring as the colors he so dearly loved to lay upon canvas.

He was the cherished son of Robert Forrest Rankin and Mary Lou Burns Rankin, both of whom preceded him in death, and he was also preceded in death by his beloved son, Martin Forrest Rankin. He is survived by his brother, Michael (Kathryn) Rankin; his niece, Summer L. (Beau) Caudill; his great nephew, Jase R. Caudill; and many cousins, among them Evelyn Ritchie, Allen Burns, Roy Williams, Jr., David Wells, and Sharon Rankin. In the great tapestry of kinship, he was a thread of warmth and wit, and those who knew him shall long keep his memory in their hearts.

Frosty was a man of uncommon creativity and gentle spirit, kind in manner, funny in speech, and ever inventive in the work of his hands. In the year 1968, he graduated from Bourbon County High School, and afterward he attended the Ringling School of Art in Sarasota, Florida, where his gift for beauty was further shaped and refined. He labored for many years as a four color stripper in the printing business for Beau Printing Co. in Lexington, Kentucky, and later became the owner of an art gallery housed within his family’s Rankin Hardware store in Millersburg, where art and heritage met beneath one roof.

His devotion to painting was not a pastime alone, but a calling that touched multitudes. He taught more than 7,000 students how to paint in an online classroom setting, and thus his talent became a lantern for others, guiding hands and awakening imaginations far and wide. His works found their way into many places of honor and delight, including paintings created for actress Jennifer Garner and country singer Blake Shelton, who treasured one of Frosty’s paintings, “Ole Red,” which hangs upon the walls of his restaurants. He painted presidents and governors, covered bridges and western themes, grannies and classics with a twist, and black and white visions that spoke with quiet power. In every stroke there was a measure of his soul, and in every finished piece there lived a little of his wonder.

He was also a proud member of the Kentucky Art Guild and served as a Kentucky Colonel, honors befitting a life spent in service to art, community, and the betterment of those around him. He loved music, and he moved through the world with the easy grace of one who understood that beauty may be found in melody, in color, and in the fellowship of kindred spirits. Though his earthly journey has ended, the gallery of his life remains open in the memories of those who knew him, and his influence shall endure like a masterwork that time itself cannot dim.

Now let the bells of remembrance sound softly for Frosty Rankin, for he was a man of rare and radiant gifts, and his life was a testament to kindness, laughter, and creativity. Though death hath claimed his mortal frame, it cannot claim the joy he gave, the lessons he taught, nor the art he left behind. So shall he be remembered with gratitude and love, as one who painted not only upon canvas, but upon the hearts of many.

A memorial service will be conducted at 11:00 AM Wednesday July 29, 2026, at the Lusk-McFarland Funeral Home Chapel, 1120 Main St., Paris, KY by Bro. Dale Gatewood. Burial will follow in the Paris Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10:00 AM Wednesday July 29, 2026, until the hour of service at the funeral home.
