Mary Wilson Obituary
Mary Wilson, 72, of Des Moines, Iowa, passed away peacefully on July 22, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family after a courageous battle with cancer.
Mary was born on December 28, 1953, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Chet and Lois Gayman. She grew up in the Des Moines area and lived a life marked by kindness, compassion, unwavering faith, and deep love for her family and friends.
On September 6, 1975, Mary married David Wilson. Although they legally separated in 1995, they maintained a close bond. Together they were blessed with two sons, Brad and Grant, who remained the greatest joy of her life.
Mary graduated from the Medical Assistant program at Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC). She began her career at the State of Iowa Brucellosis Laboratory before later pursuing her dream of owning her own business, Mary Lynn’s Large Size Fashions, a women’s clothing store in Valley Junction in West Des Moines.
Mary’s Catholic faith was the cornerstone of her life. She prayed daily for her family, friends, and anyone in need, always trusting in God’s love and mercy. She found happiness in life’s simple pleasures - restaurant dining, shopping, spending hours talking on the telephone with family and friends, and staying connected with those she loved.
Anyone who knew Mary will remember her extraordinary kindness, purity of heart, remarkable ability to listen without judgment, and genuine concern for others. She had a special gift for making people feel heard, loved, and important. Her compassion, generosity, and quiet strength touched countless lives, and her love for her family was evident in everything she did.
Mary is survived by her sons, Brad Wilson and Grant Wilson; her former husband, David Wilson; her brothers, Tom Gayman and Bob Gayman; her sister, Carol Gayman; along with many beloved nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Chet and Lois Gayman.
Visitation will be held on Monday, July 27, 2026, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Iles Dunn’s Chapel, in Des Moines. A vigil service will begin at 7:30p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, at 12:00 p.m., (Noon) at The Basilica of Saint John in Des Moines. Interment will follow at Glendale Cemetery in Des Moines.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society in Mary’s memory.
The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to the physicians, nurses, hospice caregivers, family members, and friends whose compassion, care, and support brought comfort to Mary throughout her illness.
Mary’s life was a beautiful example of faith, love, and selfless compassion. While her family grieves at her passing, they rejoice in the hope of the Resurrection and find comfort knowing that her gentle spirit, loving heart, and unwavering faith will continue to inspire all who were blessed to know her. May she rest in the eternal peace of Christ.
