Washington Native Joye Lyn Moody Remembered for a Life of Faith, Service, and Compassion Washington, D.C., has lost one of its own.

Joye Lyn Moody, a native Washingtonian whose life was defined by faith, kindness, and a lifelong commitment to serving others, passed away peacefully on July 10, 2026, surrounded by family and friends. She was 59 years old.

Born on July 2, 1967, at Georgetown University Hospital to Mary Beaufort Williams and the late Donald Norwood Moody, Joye spent her childhood on Fairmont Street NW. Her father named her “Joye” because, he said, “She brings me great joy.” She graduated from Coolidge High School in 1985 before continuing her education at the University of the District of Columbia and later earning a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and Management from Strayer University in 2016.

Although she later made Maryland her home, Joye never lost her connection to the Washington area she loved. She dedicated more than 30 years to serving the public through careers in hospitality, banking, and financial services, holding positions with TD Bank, Capital One, Homewood Suites by Hilton, and Congressional Federal Credit Union. Colleagues and customers alike remember her for treating every person with dignity, warmth, and genuine compassion.

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Joye was known for her servant’s heart. She volunteered with organizations supporting the homeless, the American Red Cross, community events, and neighborhood initiatives. She faithfully remembered birthdays, shared words of encouragement and Scripture with family and friends, cared for elderly loved ones, and was always the first to offer help when someone was in need. 

Though she had no children of her own, Joye became “Aunt Joye” to countless nieces, nephews,

and family friends. She celebrated their milestones, attended their games and graduations, and

encouraged them every step of the way.

A devoted Christian and member of First Baptist Church of Glenarden, Joye lived out her faith

through quiet acts of love rather than seeking recognition. Her greatest ministry was caring for

her beloved mother, whom she affectionately called “Mommy,” with extraordinary patience,

tenderness, and unwavering devotion.

Joye also found joy in life’s simple pleasures—traveling throughout the Caribbean, especially

Jamaica, crocheting scarves for breast cancer patients, visiting sunflower fields, taking nature

walks, reading, journaling, watching ships sail, and cheering on the Washington Commanders.

Those who knew Joye will remember her gentle spirit, radiant smile, steadfast faith, and the

countless ways she made others feel valued and loved. Her life stands as a lasting reminder that

true greatness is found not only in accomplishments but in compassion, service, and love for

others.

She leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire family, friends, colleagues, and the

Washington community she proudly called home.
