Donald "Phil" Kerns, 82, of Urbana, Ohio, passed away on Friday, July 17, 2026.

Phil was born on October 2, 1943, in Urbana, Ohio, to the late Richard "Dick" Sexton Kerns and Betty Jane (Hayzlet) Kerns.

Phil is survived by his loving wife of 53 years; Sara Jane (Toops) Kerns; his son, Ryan Nicholas (Tiffanie) Kerns; his beloved grandchildren, Carson Nicholas Kerns, Maevery Ryann Kerns, Sutton Hahn and Sawyer Weinhold; his great-granddaughter, Oaklyn Weinhold; his brothers, Richard C. (Bonnie) Kerns and James E. (Sandy) Kerns; his sister, Teresa Ann (Jerry) Myers; and many cherished nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family members, and dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his parents-in-law, Weldon and Grace Toops; his nephews, Shannon Kerns and Patrick Kerns; Sister-in-law, Shirley Toops-Day; brothers-in-law, Jerry Myers, Mike Toops; cousin, Mark Kerns; dear friends, Chuck Brunotte, Lynn Tonkinson, Ann Reedy as well as several beloved aunts, uncles, and cousins.

A proud lifelong member of the Urbana community, Phil attended St. Mary's Grade School before graduating from Urbana High School. He continued his education at Kendall School of Design in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where he developed the artistic talent that would shape his lifelong career. Following graduation, Phil honorably served his country in the United States Army.

Faith was at the center of Phil's life. A devoted member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Urbana, he generously gave his time and talents to his parish for many years. He served on the Parish Council, participated in the maintenance and fundraising committees, supported numerous school activities, and proudly served alongside his son Ryan as an altar server. Phil was also a leader for St. Mary's Cub Scouts and the Young Neighbors in Action program, touching the lives of countless young people through his guidance and example.

Professionally, Phil was a gifted interior designer and, together with his beloved wife, Sara, owned and operated Guild Galleries Interior and Gifts in downtown Urbana. His creativity, eye for design, and warm personality helped make their business a cherished part of the community.

Phil's commitment to Urbana extended far beyond his business. He served as President of the Downtown Urbana Business Organization, President of the Champaign Arts Council Board of Directors, and President of the Champaign County Chamber of Commerce, was a board member for Urbana's Art Affair on the Square and worked on numerous committees dedicated to promoting and strengthening downtown Urbana. Among his many contributions, Phil helped secure funding for the purchase and maintenance of the American flags that proudly line the streets of downtown Urbana.

Outside of his many civic and church commitments, Phil found great joy in gardening, traveling, creating art, cooking, and spending time with those he loved. Above all, he cherished his family, who were the greatest blessing of his life.

Phil will be remembered for his unwavering faith, artistic spirit, servant's heart, and his lifelong dedication to his family, his church, and the Urbana community. His kindness, generosity, and enduring legacy of service will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.

A gathering of family and friends will be held at VERNON FUNERAL HOME on Wednesday July 22nd from 4:00 P.M. – 7:00 P.M.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Urbana, Ohio, on Thursday July 23rd at 1:00 P.M., 228 Washington Ave, Urbana, with Father Kevin LeMelle, celebrant.
