Daryl Maurice Black Obituary

The family of Daryl Maurice Black, a 34-year resident of Tehachapi, is saddened to announce his passing on Monday, July 20, 2026, at the age of 92.

Daryl was born on June 20, 1934, in Independence, Iowa, to Gladys Miller of Palo Alto County, Iowa, and Delbert Black of Jackson County, Iowa. He dedicated 20 years to the U.S. Army, serving honorably across Vietnam, Korea, Europe, and the United States before retiring in 1974. Following his military career, Daryl worked with several warehousing and transportation logistics companies, and he particularly loved his work as a driver for Orange County Transit District.

An honorable, hardworking family man and role model, Daryl was a prolific storyteller with an amazing mind for detail. Music was a true passion of his; he lent his beautiful tenor voice to the Summit Singers, the Orange County Concert Chorale, and several other vocal groups throughout his life. As a native Iowan, never once did he turn down an opportunity to ride a tractor. Daryl was deeply proud of his military service and active community involvement in various VFWs. Dedicated to his faith, serving in local churches was always a priority. But above all else, he was proudest of his family.

Daryl is survived by his loving wife of 72 years, Jacqueline Black; their daughters Mika Amato (Paul), Lore Slover (Russell), and Jana Severson (Greg); their beloved grandchildren Ross (Tamara), Cara, Megan (Kris), Amelia, and Jack; their great-grandchildren Riley (Emily), Dylan, Gwyneth, Wyatt, Audrey, Myles, Elyse, Emmy Joy, Jayce, Alyana, Giana, Avery and Ashlyn; their great-great-grandchildren Everett and Adelyn; his sister Joan Lowe (Mike); and many loving nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Delbert and Gladys Black, and his sister Evelyn Van Horn.
