Frank James Smithson, 71, of Des Moines, Iowa, formerly of New York City, passed away on July 11, 2026, at Greater Southside Health and Rehabilitation in Des Moines.
Frank was born on October 30, 1954, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Richard Dale and Donna Mae (Hibbert) Smithson. He was educated in Des Moines and graduated from Lincoln High School with the Class of 1972.
After graduation, Frank lived for a time in Chicago and Colorado before settling in New York City, where he owned and operated Van Man Moving Company. He also worked for the family business, Smithson Limousine Services, helping locate limousines and transport them back to Des Moines.
Frank was preceded in death by his parents; his best friend and faithful companion, his dog Diamond; and many extended family members.
He is survived by his brother, Larry Smithson; his cousin, Joyce Short; and his nephews, Christopher, Ryan, and Jason Smithson.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 23, 2026, at Iles Dunn's Chapel in Des Moines. Visitation will begin one hour prior to the service at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Glendale Cemetery in Des Moines.
