Florence Lee Burke, age 92, passed away peacefully on July 15, 2026, leaving behind a lifetime of cherished memories, meaningful relationships, and a legacy of education, curiosity, and kindness.

Born on June 17, 1934, in New York, Florence was the daughter of William and Lolita Burke. She spent her early childhood in Jackson Heights, Queens, before her family relocated to Margate, New Jersey, in 1942 when her father was transferred to the United States Coast Guard station in Atlantic City.

Florence was a lifelong learner with a passion for education. She earned her bachelor's degree from Brown University as a member of the Class of 1956 before receiving her master's degree from Temple University in 1961. She originally wanted to be an archeologist and eventually dedicated 34 years of her life to teaching Latin at Atlantic City High School, inspiring generations of students through her knowledge, patience, and love of language.

Music was an important part of Florence's life from an early age. As a child, she played both the piano and trumpet, and later in life she found joy in playing the guitar. Her many interests reflected her adventurous and creative spirit. Florence loved spending time at the beach, fishing, crabbing, horseback riding, bird watching, painting, participating in local craft shows, and getting lost in a good book. She was an active member of Mensa, the Audobon Club, and her beloved book club, where she formed lasting friendships through shared interests.

Above all, Florence treasured the people she loved. She especially cherished the many years she shared with her devoted lifelong partner, Ellie, whose love and companionship brought her immense happiness. Together they created countless treasured memories filled with laughter, adventure, and unwavering support.

Florence is lovingly remembered by her grandchildren, Hildy, Justine, Jalen, Kristin, Mike, Kaycee, and Zack; her great-grandchildren, Mia, Dorian, and Radley; and her lifelong friend, Misty, along with many extended family members, former students, colleagues, and friends whose lives she touched throughout her remarkable journey.

She was predeceased by her mother, Lolita Burke; her grandmother, Florence; and her beloved lifelong partner, Ellie.

Florence will be remembered for her intelligence, generosity, creativity, adventurous spirit, and deep appreciation for learning and the natural world. Her legacy lives on in the countless students she taught, the family and friends she loved, and all who were fortunate enough to know her.

Memorial Services

A visitation in honor of Florence Lee Burke will be held on Monday, July 20, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., followed by a memorial service from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. given by Sharon Patterson at:
