Michael Cosgrove passed away on July 8, 2026, at the age of 75. He was born on October 1, 1950, in Chicago, Illinois, to Helen (Butterly) and John Cosgrove.

Mike led a unique life. He was the fifth of eight siblings and grew up in Chicago’s Edgewater community. He attended St. Gertrude Grammar School, DePaul Academy and St. George High School. Mike’s life took many turns before he settled into a position with the City of Chicago’s Department of Streets and Sanitation from which he retired. Mike’s first love was music, specifically Motown and blues. He cemented his love of music by teaching himself to play the bass guitar and playing for more than 20 years in the Backstreet Blues Band with his loyal band mates. Mike was possessed of a rapier wit that took no prisoners. Yet, he was a joy to be around and left all comers sore with laughter. RIP Legend.

He is survived by sisters Anne (Edward) Seimetz and Patricia (Michael) Dyra, brothers John (the late Susan) and Thomas (Audrey), brother-in-law Alfred Deutsch, sisters-in-law Jean and Paula and many nieces, nephews, cousins and cherished friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Helen and John and siblings Mary Helen, Francis and James.

A visitation will be held Thursday, July 23, 2026, 4-8 pm, at Smith Corcoran Funeral Home, 6150 N. Cicero Ave., Chicago, IL 60646. There will be a short service beginning at 6pm. Interment private. For info, 773-736-3833.
