Dorothy Jean Ducksworth Hood Young was born on December 15, 1939, in Laurel, Mississippi, to Worthie and Annie Lene Ducksworth. She lived a life defined by quiet strength, grace, and a deep commitment to others. On June 14, 2026, she peacefully transitioned to her heavenly home, leaving a legacy of love and service. 

She graduated from Oak Park High School in 1958 and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Tougaloo College. A visit to Jersey City, NJ led her to a lifelong career in education. Dorothy began as a third-grade teacher in the Jersey City Public School System, where she inspired generations of students. Dedicated to lifelong learning, she earned a Master’s degree in Secondary Education (English) from Kean University and additional certifications. After 37 years, she retired as Assistant Principal of PS #11 and later mentored new teachers. 

In 1972, Dorothy settled in Scotch Plains and became a devoted member of St. John’s Baptist Church. For over 30 years, she taught Sunday School, led the Summer Enrichment Program, organized youth activities, and served as president of the Inspirational Choir. 

She found joy in baking—especially her coconut and pound cakes—playing pinochle and bid whist, and reading. Above all, she cherished her family. Predeceased by Charles Hood and Albert Young, she is survived by her daughters, Portia Hood-Marshall and Kimberly Hood; grandchildren Sawyer West, Remy Marshall, and Hunter Marshall; her siblings Thelma Thomas, Russell Ducksworth (Nirmala), Connie Edwards (Rudolph), Harry Ducksworth (Valerie), LaJuana Ducksworth, and Michael Ducksworth.; and many extended family and friends. 

Dorothy’s life reflected compassion, generosity, and unwavering faith. Though she is gone, her love and impact will continue to inspire generations.
