The Reverend Edward (Ted) Pomfret of Gloucester passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 21, 2026. He was born on November 14, 1928 in Rusthall, Kent, England the son of the late Lionel and Agnes Pomfret.

Ted’s early years were a time of worldwide turmoil. He was born into the deprivation of the Great Depression, followed soon after by World War II. His education was disrupted as schools were closed in South East England due to the heavy aerial fighting and bombing during the Battle of Britain. But, as a young boy, he took great

delight in collecting pieces of planes and bombs left from aerial battles.

He drifted into engineering as an indentured apprentice, studying part time which ultimately led to his election as member of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers, London.

In 1958 Ted began his long career with The Gillette Safety Razor Company in London. He held a number of positions in Engineering and Research & Development. During this time, he was named on over 160 patents.

In 1974 Ted was appointed Director of Corporate Engineering, Europe. In this position he was responsible for the design, manufacturing and implementation of production equipment in Gillette plants around the world. In 1989 Ted transferred to Gillette headquarters in Boston as Technical Director overseeing the development of new, “cutting edge”, manufacturing equipment.

Ted retired from Gillette in 1993 and decided to pursue a life-long interest in theology. He attended Andover Newton Theological School, graduating with a Masters of Divinity degree. Ted was ordained in the United Church of Christ (Congregational) in 2000 and served as an Area Supply minister for the 40 churches of the Essex Association of the Massachusetts UCC. He also served as chairperson of the Association’s Church and Ministry Committee for five years.

In his free time, Ted enjoyed sailing, tennis, watching the Red Sox, classical music and times spent on both sides of the Atlantic with his children and grandchildren.

Ted is survived by his wife, Kathy; his three children, Nicholas, Alyson and Simon and their spouses; 7 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his brother Victor.

A memorial service will take place at First Church in Wenham, 1 Arbor St., Wenham on July 7th at 11 a.m. Burial will be private.
