Stuart Bruce Cundiff Sr. was born on September 20, 1946, in Plainfield, New Jersey, to the late James Cundiff Sr. and Josephine Selby Cundiff. He entered eternal rest on Friday, June 19, 2026, at Morristown Memorial Hospital in Morristown, New Jersey.

Affectionately known as "Poncho" to his family and close friends, Stuart attended the Plainfield Public School System and graduated from Plainfield High School in 1964. Following graduation, he proudly enlisted in the United States Air Force through the "Buddy System" alongside four of his closest friends. He faithfully served his country during the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged upon completing his military service. Stuart remained deeply proud of his service throughout his life.

After returning home, Stuart pursued higher education and completed coursework in the financial field. He began his banking career with Beneficial Financial Services and later worked for Starpoint Bank, which subsequently became Dime Savings Bank.

In June 1972, Stuart met Sandra Smith while she was visiting from Bermuda to attend her brother's high school graduation. That chance encounter marked the beginning of a loving and lasting relationship. One year later, on July 7, 1973, they were married. Their union was blessed with two sons, Kenn D. Cundiff and Stuart B. Cundiff Jr.

In 1983, Stuart joined the Savings Bank of Central Jersey as an Administrative Assistant. Through his dedication, professionalism, and strong work ethic, he advanced within the organization, earning promotions to Collection Manager and later to the Mortgage Department.

Building on his success in the banking industry, Stuart founded Flexible Benefits Mortgage Corporation in North Plainfield, New Jersey. He later relocated the company to Plainfield, New Jersey. As the first African American in the State of New Jersey to own and operate a mortgage brokerage firm, he broke barriers and paved the way for future generations of minority entrepreneurs in the financial services industry. Through his expertise, integrity, and commitment to helping families achieve homeownership, he earned the respect and admiration of clients, colleagues, and the communities he served. After a successful career, Stuart retired.

Stuart remained deeply involved in his community throughout his life. From 1977 to 1981, he served as an assistant coach with the Plainfield Boys Sports League, mentoring and supporting young athletes. He also played basketball for the Church of Latter-day Saints team in Scotch Plains, New Jersey.

A dedicated youth sports coach, Stuart later became an assistant coach for the Plainfield Little League teams, the Pirates and the Dodgers, where he proudly coached his sons and many other local youth. Beyond athletics, he remained active in civic and community affairs. From 1981 to 1985, he served as a member of the Recreation Advisory Committee in Plainfield. He was also a member of the Plainfield Chamber of Commerce, served as a Board Member of Optimist International in Watchung, New Jersey, and was active with the Community Development Corporation (CDC) at Cathedral International in Perth Amboy, New Jersey. These roles reflected his lifelong commitment to service, leadership, and community development.

Stuart loved to travel with his wife, Sandra. Their favorite destination was the Dominican Republic, a place that brought them joy and special memories together.

Stuart was preceded in death by his father, James Cundiff Sr.; his mother, Josephine Selby Cundiff; his brother, James "Skipper" Cundiff Jr.; his sister-in-law, Theresa Cundiff; and his niece, Danielle Cundiff.

He leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife, Sandra Cundiff and his two sons, Kenn D. Cundiff (Rosalyn) and Stuart B. Cundiff Jr.

He also leaves behind eight grandchildren: Kenn D. Cundiff II (Nina), Jocelyn Alomar, Myalissa Alomar, Kenndal Cundiff (Tara), Stuart B. Cundiff III, Tyrese Cundiff, Leah Cundiff, and Zion Cundiff.  As well as, eight great-grandchildren: Akemi Cundiff, Kaylanni Alomar, Kenn Cundiff ("Lil D"), Aniya Monroe, Lucas Trujillo, Kaya Cundiff, Kamari Cundiff, and Kaiden Alomar.

He is further survived by a host of cherished cousins, extended family members, and dear friends.

Stuart's legacy of faith, service, perseverance, and love for family will continue to inspire all who knew him. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
