Craig Daub Smith, 83, of South Windsor, loving husband and father, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Tuesday, June 23, 2026. He was born on March 10, 1943, in Fort Sill, OK, one of three children to the late Maj. Gen. Selwyn Dyson Smith, Jr. and Elizabeth (Daub) Smith.

The son of an army officer, Craig grew up moving between various locations across the United States, as well as abroad — from Saltsburg, PA, to Salzburg, Austria. He was a fourth-generation legacy of Kiskiminetas Spring School (PA), class of 1961, and a graduate of Wooster College (OH), class of 1965. Later, he earned a Master of Education from Millersville State College (PA).

An ardent sports fan and outstanding athlete, Craig played baseball, football, and basketball throughout his school years, earning numerous awards, and auditioned for the Pittsburgh Pirates, one of his favorite teams. He was also an enthusiast of history, which he both studied and taught, particularly the Civil War, the Old West, and World War II.

An early entrant into the newly burgeoning world of computer programming, Craig also briefly served the public as a police officer in Avon, CT, before moving on to develop databases for the Connecticut State Police. However, the career closest to his heart was that of an educator. He served as a teacher, coach, and headmaster at various institutions, including Deerfield Academy (MA), Flint Hill School (VA), and York County Day School (PA), where he acted as a friend and guide to the younger generation.

Craig is survived by his wife of eight years, Carol (Myers) Yanaros; his son, Hayes Daub Smith and his partner Roberto Bravi of Rome, Italy; his brother, Selwyn Dyson Smith, III and his wife Virginia of Jacksonville, FL; his sister, Marcia Thessin and her husband James of Arlington, VA; as well as a host of nieces, nephews and their families. Craig was predeceased by his parents as well as his wife of forty-five years, Starr (Walton) Smith, mother of Hayes.

A time of visitation for family and friends will be held on Sunday, June 28, 2026, from 2-4 p.m. at the Samsel & Carmon Funeral Home, 419 Buckland Rd., South Windsor. At the request of his family, burial will be held privately at a later date.
