Brookings resident, Daniel Richard Gloss, Sr., passed away on June 14, 2026, in Brookings, Oregon. He was born May 30, 1938 in Trego, Maryland.

Daniel enlisted in the United States Navy at the age of 17 and served honorably for 20 years, retiring as a Chief Petty Officer. He served aboard aircraft carriers and destroyers during the Vietnam War. He was the Captain of the Navy Pistol Team and earned numerous awards and trophies for marksmanship. As an accomplished sharpshooter and pistol instructor, he taught at the United States Navy Academy at Annapolis, Maryland. He went on to earn his college degree after he retired from the Navy. Daniel later became a gunsmith, owning his own business. He worked on and cleaned firearms for police officers and other customers.

Daniel loved the outdoors! He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed hunting and woodworking. He loved being around animals and taking in the beauty of nature.

Daniel is survived by his wife of 69 years, Janet, whom he married in 1957; he is also survived by children Daniel Richard Gloss Jr. and wife Lynn; Selena Gloss Hovey and her husband Dean W., and Michael Craig Gloss. Grandchildren are Melinda Hovey Goggin, Richard T. Hovey, Rachel Rocha, Renee Heatherly, Daniel Gloss III and Christopher Gloss. He was the great grandfather of 12 and great-great-grandfather of 7.

A Service will be held at 2 pm on Friday, June 19, 2026, at Redwood Memorial Chapel, 1020 Fifield Street, Brookings, Oregon. He will be interred at W. J. Ward Memorial Cemetery on June 23rd.
