Helen May Bates (née Sands) 1927–2026

It is with heavy hearts that the family of Helen May Bates (née Sands) announce her passing on June 6, 2026, at the age of 98.

Born November 24th, 1927, in Port Colborne, Ontario, Helen was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, neighbour, and friend.

Predeceased by her beloved husband Fred, devoted sister Olivia, and son Alan, she will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by her children Bonnie (Bruce), Douglas “Doug” (Judy), Donald Robert “Bob” (Susan), and Frederick “Fred” (Laurie); her grandchildren Michael (Amanda), Lesley, Brian (Meagan), Laura (Henry), Lindsey (Brandon), Bryce (Lindsay), Terri (Vince), Curtis (Melissa), and Krysten (Quintin); and her great-grandchildren Levon, Gracie, Owen, Jordyn, Alice, Henry, Aislyn, Morgan, Hazel, Kaeson, Amelia, and Dominic.

Known for her tenacity, quiet strength, and steadfast resolve, Helen built a beautiful life in her Fonthill home, where she lived for more than 70 years. An exceptional cook, baker, gardener, and creative spirit, she shaped a home rooted in care, hard work, and simple pleasures, and filled it with the comforting aromas of home-cooked meals, delicious pies, and homemade preserves. Her kitchen was a gathering place where family and friends were always welcome, cherished memories were made, and a jar of peanut M&M's was never far from reach.

The family takes comfort in knowing she is reunited with dear husband Fred, and that her spirit will live on in every recipe passed down, every story shared, and every gathering she continues to inspire.

Helen will be laid to rest at Fonthill Cemetery. A private family service will be held to honour her life.
