Elizabeth "Libby" (Hankins) Ray Obituary

Mrs. Elizabeth "Libby" (Hankins) Ray, age 93, of Vevay, Indiana, entered this life on July 30, 1932 in Switzerland County, Indiana. She was the loving daughter of the late William Paul and Anna F. (McFarland) Hankins. She was raised in Switzerland County and was a 1979 graduate of the Switzerland County High School. Libby was united in marriage to Vernon Douglas Ray, Jr. on October 26, 1948 in Madison, Indiana. This happy union of 50 years was blessed with four children. Libby owned and operated Lake Dilldear Truck Stop in Dillsboro, Indiana, from 1948-1954. She also owned and operated Ray's Tavern in Dillsboro, Indiana in the 1950's for several years. Libby owned and operated Ray's Dollar Store in Vevay, Indiana, from 1968-1972. They also owned and operated Ray's Grocery Store in Moorefield, Indiana, from 1972-1973 and Ray's Package Store in Vevay, Indiana, retiring in 1994, after 36 years of service. She was a life member of the Vevay American Legion Post #185 Ladies Auxiliary and the Vevay VFW Post #5396 Ladies Auxiliary. Libby faithfully served as treasurer of the Switzerland County Democrat Party for 20 years, during which time she was very active and deeply committed to the party's mission and service to the community. She also served as treasurer for the Switzerland County Chamber of Commerce for five years and was a member of the Switzerland Baptist Church in Vevay, Indiana. Libby enjoyed traveling and reading and will deeply missed by her family. Libby passed away with her loving family by her side at 10:30 p.m., Thursday, January 8, 2026, at her residence in Vevay, Indiana.


Libby will be lovingly remembered by her son, Mickey D. Ray and his wife, Direnda of Rising Sun, IN; her grandchildren, Brandy Brewer, Mickie Lynn Furnish (Michael), Gregory Brewer, James "Jimmy" Short (Rebecca), Jacqueline Scudder, and Emy Jo Duke (Brandon); her great-grandchildren, Ashley Sorrell (Chester), Noah Hughes (Katie), Brittany Marcum, Zachary Brewer, Alexander Hise, Aaron Scudder, Kirsten Furnish, Aiden Furnish, Alli McClellan, and Briar Duke; her great-great-grandchildren, Maylee and Amelia June Hughes; and her nieces, nephews, and cousins.


She was preceded in death by her father, William Paul Hankins, died August 6, 1978; her mother, Anna F. (McFarland) Hankins, died August 28, 1981; her husband, Vernon Douglas Ray, Jr., died November 24, 1998; her daughters, Rhonda Lee Ray, died April 6, 1952 and Terri Linn Spenneberg, died November 25, 2013; her son, Larry Michael Ray, died June 30, 1953; her great-grandson, Michael Damian Brewer, died July 4, 2017; and her brothers, William Stanley Hankins, died February 2, 1954 and Paul David Hankins, died November 1, 1993;


Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, January 13, 2026, at the Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home, 208 Ferry Street, Vevay, Indiana 47043.


Funeral services and Auxiliary Services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, January 13, 2026, by Rev. Mike Jones, at the Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home, 208 Ferry Street, Vevay, Indiana 47043.


Interment will follow in the Vevay Cemetery, Vevay, Indiana.
