Mrs. Carolyn J. West Obituary

Carolyn J. West, age 84, of Columbus, passed away Thursday, January 8, 2026. She was born in Columbus, Indiana on June 1, 1941, to Mark and Evelyn Walters. She graduated from Columbus High School in 1959 and married Dennis A. West.

Carolyn loved her kids and dedicated her life to them. She enjoyed doing whatever they wanted to do from camping, travel softball, basketball, trips to Florida, and especially shopping. She wasn’t happy unless her kids were. In addition to raising her own children, she enjoyed babysitting for other families. She went to work in the main office at Columbus North High School. Carolyn was also a wonderful pianist but was too shy to showcase her talents publicly. Her favorite song was Sweet Georgia Brown.

She is survived by her daughters, Kim West (Seymour), Shari West (Rusty Callahan) (Columbus), son, David West (Debbie) (Knoxville, TN), sisters, Nancy Day (Frank Hoban) , Sharon Walters and Lisa Thayer (Shawn) all of Columbus, nephews Jeff Day, Braden Day, nieces Kelli Roberts (Shane), Alexa Day, all of Columbus, and a cousin, John Gilmore, of Indianapolis. Also surviving are her “pride and joys,” grandsons, Matthew West, Zachary West, and Ryan West, all of Knoxville, TN, and her great-grandsons Shiloh, Malachi, and Elias West. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dennis, brother, David Walters, and brother-in-law, E. G. “Zeke” Day.

Carolyn loved animals. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Bartholomew County Humane Society.

Services have been entrusted to Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home.

In keeping with Mrs. West’s wishes cremation will take place and a memorial service will be planned at a later date.

Online condolences and special memories may be shared with the West family at barkesweaverglick.com.
