John H. Shaw, 87, of Quincy, passed away surrounded by family on Thursday, January 8, 2026, at his home in Quincy, IL.
John was born April 4, 1938, in Knox City, MO to Carson and Margaret (Karhoff) Shaw. He was first married to Bonnie Thirtyacre in 1957 and from this union one son, John was born. He later married Nyda Ashbaker on June 4, 1960, in Edina, MO and from this union, two daughters, Carleen and Veronica were born. She preceded him in death on August 31, 2001. He later married Patricia Jean Stroud on February 13, 2004, in Quincy, IL. She survives.
Other survivors include his three children, John W. Shaw (Kristen) of Tiffin, IA, Carleen Orr (Steve) of Quincy, and Veronica Shaw of Quincy; seven grandchildren, Kristine Thielen (Joe), John W. Shaw Jr., Robert Orr (Michelle), Matthew Shaw (Sharon), Nikki Goeller (Ryan), Jessica Shaw, Joshua Shaw (Courtney); and eight great-grandchildren, Braydon, Alex, Laci, Vincent, James, Anneliese, Elijah, and Penelope.
John was preceded in death by his parents; his second wife, Nyda Shaw; two grandsons, Bryan and Brandon Shaw; two brothers, Asa and Harold Shaw; two sisters, Hazel Bualle and Helen Brooks; and his dog of 19 years, Scrappy Doo.
A graduate of Knox County High School, John was a man of many talents and interests. In his early years, he owned a tree service before embarking on a long and distinguished career as a truck driver. He proudly drove over 5 million miles for Dot Foods over 23 years. He was also the owner of Stubby's Tavern for 18 years, a local gathering place that reflected his warm and welcoming nature.
John's passions extended beyond his professional life. An outdoorsman at heart, he relished deer hunting, mushroom foraging, and gardening. A devoted Chicago Cubs fan, he also found pleasure in watching Westerns and the television series Yellowstone. John's love for games was evident in his enjoyment of shuffleboard and pool, participating in a weekly league that brought him much joy.
Above all, John was a man who cherished time with his family and friends. His friendly personality was legendary; he was known for never meeting a stranger and always greeting everyone with, "Have I got a deal for you". John's warmth, kindness, and the joy he found in life's simple pleasures will be fondly remembered and deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Friends and Family are invited to John's Life Celebration at a visitation that will be Monday, January 12, 2026, from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at O'Donnell-Cookson Life Celebration Home in Quincy, IL.
A Funeral Ceremony will be at 10:00 am Tuesday, January 13, 2026, at the O'Donnell-Cookson Life Celebration Home in Quincy. Pastor Ron Tallcott will officiate. Burial will follow at Greenmount Cemetery in Quincy, IL.
