Mr. Russell Bowers Chiles, Jr., beloved husband, father and grandfather passed away on January 8, 2026 at the age of 82.

Russell was born May 26, 1943 in Memphis, Tennessee, son of the late Russell Bowers, Sr., and the late Joyce Mann Chiles.   He married the love of his life, Rebecca Nell Young on New Year’s Eve 1962 sharing a great love story for 63 years. They were truly blessed by their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.  

Russ and Becky grew up in Osceola, Arkansas.  After they graduated High School Becky attended Vanderbilt University while Russ went on to receive his Business Degree from the University of Arkansas.  They eventually moved their family to Laurinburg in 1971 to work for John Blue Company. Russ continued his career as a successful salesman in the manufactured home industry until retiring, while Becky taught in Scotland County Elementary School system for 30 years.  He and Becky served as long-time faithful members of Saint Luke United Methodist Church.  

From the age of 6, he developed a love for radio-controlled model airplanes.  He enjoyed designing, building and especially flying, a hobby he enjoyed his entire life.   He was also an avid golfer and member of Scotch Meadows Country Club until health issues limited his game.    Above all, he cherished his family and the time shared with each of them.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Rebecca “Becky” Young Chiles; son, Russell Bowers Chiles, III ”Trey” and wife, Maggie; daughter, Melissa “Missy” Chiles Beasley and husband, Rob; grandchildren, Brittany Beasley Stanofski (James), Macon Chiles and Victor Chiles; great grandchildren, Caleb, Rebecca, Noah, Esther, John and Nehemiah; his brother, Ronald Mann Chiles (Joann); and sister, Vicki Joy Chiles Purifoy (John).  Russ also leaves a host of loving extended family and friends. 

 

The family requests donations be given in Russell’s memory to the Saint Luke United Methodist Church, 1501 Turnpike Road, Laurinburg, NC  28352
