Jean Lyle Budd Culham Obituary

Passed away peacefully on January 8, 2026, at the age of 99.

Jean was born in Toronto but grew up in Timmins, Ontario. She is predeceased by her parents, Percy and Jessie Carson, and her two brothers John Carson and William Carson Recently predeceased by her husband Glen Erwin Culham, Jean leaves behind her 4 children: Douglas (Maureen McPhee), Allan (Mira Culham), Barbara (Lincoln Metcalfe) and Beverly (Michael Werner); 5 grandchildren: Katherine (Keith Martin), Andrew, Jeffrey (Colleen Haukaas), Allison and Eden (Kevin McGee); and two great grandchildren, Killian and Eleanor Martin. She also leaves behind many beloved nieces and nephews across Canada - Sandy Chisholm, Bill Carson, Brian Carson, Dennis Carson, David Hicks, Susan Lang and Nancy Hicks-Mahler. Jean is also survived by her husband Glen's sister, Margaret Ann, who lives in Regina, Saskatchewan.

Jean graduated in Nursing at the Toronto General Hospital in 1948. From her graduating nursing class, she made lifelong friendships and attended many reunions over the years. She married a young naval officer, Glen Culham, in 1949. They raised their family from Halifax NS on the east coast to Victoria BC on the west coast. Stops in between included Ottawa, Portchester, (England), Victoria again, Montreal, London (Ontario) and and finally Ottawa again in 1967.

She worked as a nurse at several hospitals across Canada, most notably the Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria, BC, the Lakeshore General in Pointe Claire, Quebec, the Victoria Hospital in London, Ontario, and the Riverside General Hospital in Ottawa, Ontario. One of Jean’s great passions was for the outdoor life at her island home in Lake Temagami in Northern Ontario. “Carson Island” was a place that she loved, enjoyed and happily shared with her many family members and friends. Her family will always remember Jean driving her boats on Lake Temagami, swimming every day in the cold lake water, rain or shine, and enjoying the company of family and friends, whether from around the lake or from far locations. Jean was a long-time member of both the Temagami United Church and the Riverside United Church in Ottawa. At Riverside United, she served in various capacities since church members first met at Brookfield High School 1967 to its current location on Riverside Drive. A special thank you to the now retired Reverend Paul Dillman for his kindness and support to Jean over his 22 years as minister.

Thanks also to the residents and the staff of the Ravines Retirement Residence who were invariably kind, friendly and supportive in Jean’s years there. A special thanks as well to Dr. Laura Visentin at the Ottawa Hospital Academic Family Health Team. Special thanks as well to Kate Mackenzie of Bayshore Home Care, Janet Zhao and colleagues of Choice Homecare, Shannon Blackler NP of the Regional Palliative Consultation Team and the Ravines medical and community support staff for their particular kindness and sensitivity during Jean’s final days.
