Frances Lavainia Grove Markle, 91, of Bunker Hill, passed away on Saturday, January 3, 2026, at her home.
She was born on July 21, 1934, in Martinsburg, West Virginia, to the late Leslie Grove and Velet Strobridge Grove. Frances was a graduate of Martinsburg High School, Class of 1952.
Frances dedicated 30 years of service as a school cook at Inwood Primary School, where she lovingly fed generations of children. She had a passion for gardening and, when her children were young, tended nearly half an acre of land, proudly growing her beloved sunflowers. Frances also loved being in the kitchen, finding joy in cooking and feeding those around her.
Her grandson, Jamie, introduced her to a love of sports, and she rarely missed attending his sporting events. Above all, Frances cherished her family, especially her grandson and her great-grandchildren, who brought her immense joy.
She is survived by her daughter, Lora Ann Davis; grandson, James “Jamie” Lee Kees III, and his wife, Jenifer; great-grandchildren, Holland Waugh and Hunter Kees; and sister in law Katherine Grove.
In addition to her parents, Frances was preceded in death by her husband, Harold R. Markle, who passed away on January 3, 2005; her son, Hunter “Bobby” Robert Markle; and her brothers, Charles Grove, Donald Grove, and Alton Grove.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 12, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg, WV 25401, with longtime family friend Pastor Tim Butler officiating. The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the service.
Interment will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens.
