Vasil Smeliakou of East Brunswick peacefully passed away on Saturday, January 3, 2026 at Care One in East Brunswick, surrounded by his loving family. He was 103 years old.

Born in Vitebsk, Belarus to the late Gavrila and Fedora Smeliakou, Vasil spent his life in Belarus before immigrating to the United States at the age of 85. Before his retirement, Mr. Smaliakou was a principal and teacher, previously earning his Master’s degree in education. Having spoken no English throughout his life, Vasil worked hard to learn the language upon his arrival in the Unites States, speaking admirably especially after learning English so late in life. He was an incredibly strong man, both mentally and physically, aiding to his long and illustrious life. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather and will be missed by the many whom he knew throughout his life.

Vasil is predeceased by his beloved wife Katherine and by his son Oleg.

Surviving is his loving daughter and her husband Tanya and Eugene Magalif of East Brunswick.

A burial will take place at 12pm on Friday at Forest Green Cemetery in Marlboro under the direction of M.A. Maliszewski Funeral Home, 218 Whitehead Avenue, South River.
