Darrell Roop Obituary

Darrell E. Roop Sr, age 65, of Johnson City, entered eternal rest at his residence after a 15-month battle with lung cancer on January 3, 2026.

Darrell was born in Pennington Gap, VA on September 15, 1960, and was a graduate of Lynn View High School in Kingsport, TN, class of 1978. He joined the United States Air Force at the age of 17 and cared for his younger brothers before doing so. He was employed by QEP, later known as LPI (MDCarts), for 20 years. His diagnosis of metastasized stage 4 cancer forced him into early retirement in July of 2025. He was known for being able to fix any and everything, especially things requiring an electrician. He was full of knowledge and believed that everyone needed to learn a trade. He truly was a jack of all trades himself. There was nothing that he couldn’t do!

He loved the TN Vols despite his son being a diehard Kentucky fan. He loved to ride his motorcycle when he got the chance to, and the air quality allowed him to. He loved his animals very much. He loved all the junk food and sweets you could think of, one of his favorites being a Wendy’s chocolate frosty. He was a loving, proud father to his son, Darrell Jr. He was an extremely proud Papaw of 4, and the sun rose and set in them to him. He was their biggest cheerleader, and he loved to watch them play baseball and basketball. If he couldn’t get to their games physically, he wanted to watch their games live from home or the hospital. He loved to sneak them all of the junk food, popsicles, McDonald’s Happy Meals with sodas, and send them home next door. He wanted to teach Jayden and Jaylen how to really build things and wire them up and wanted to teach Karmen how to drive in an empty parking lot someday and wanted to teach all of them how to not be afraid of bugs.

He is preceded in death by his mother, Charlotte Roop and father, Joe Roop.

Left to cherish his memory are; his only child, his son, Darrell Jr and his daughter in law, Logan; His 4 beautiful grandchildren, Karmen, Jaylen, Jayden and Kashton; His brothers Ricky and Timmy and their spouses Lisa and Teresa and children Ricky, Kayla, Jordan & David; His dog, Sky; Friend from work, Mark; several other friends and family. The family will hold a Celebration of Life at a later date.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Amedysis Hospice and to our Cornerstone caregiver, Teresa. They helped make getting Darrell home from being hospitalized for almost 5 months on Christmas Eve possible and took excellent care of him for the 10 days that we were able to have him home.
