It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Michael William Kauffman on Saturday, January 3, 2026, in the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney on August 1, 1940, he was the son of the late Wilfred “Bill” and Jane (Murray) Kauffman.
Michael was a pillar of the community of Big Pond Centre for 33.5 years before settling in Howie Centre in the fall of 2021.
Michael worked for CN Railroad for 37.5 years. After retirement he dedicated significant time contributing to the community of Big Pond and surrounding area. He also worked for his good friend, Dave Gillis on many projects to keep busy. Michael was an avid ice skater and loved watching a game of hockey. You would always hear about the weather after his two-hour walks.
Michael is survived by his wife, Heather Ann (Coombs); sons, Christopher and Richard, both of Howie Centre; sisters, Nancy (Gary) Maxwell, Sydney Forks, Jude Kane, Brampton, ON and Connie Ross, Whitney Pier; brother, David, Sydney; many nieces and nephews; and his fur baby, Jack.
He was predeceased by his sister, Geraldine Flynn and brother, Thomas.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel. Funeral Mass will be held at Our Lady of Fatima Church on Friday, January 9th at 11 am with Father Conrad Edwards officiating. Interment will take place at a later date in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Donations may be made to St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Big Pond.
