Richard J. "Dick" Miehl Obituary

Richard J. “Dick” Miehl, age 74, of Erie passed away on Saturday, January 3, 2026. He was born in Erie on October 14, 1951, a son of the late Joseph and Helen (Freeman) Miehl.

After high school, Dick enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1972 and served with the Truck Company, 4th Marine Division, Erie, Pennsylvania. In October of 1974 Dick joined the Erie Fire Department, serving there for 33 years, retiring in 2007. While he was with the fire department, Dick was a member of the 3rd platoon as a driver for Truck, Ladder, then Tower Company #1 out of South Central fire station and later as firefighter on Engine Company #6, was a member of the dive team, and served as the secretary treasurer for the International Association of Firefighters Local 293.

He loved spending time with family, especially large family picnics, and get-togethers. He was a proud and devoted grandfather who took immense joy in following his grandchildren’s schooling, swim meets, and the many activities that filled their lives. Dick was a member of Sacred Heart Church, where he was active serving fish dinners, in faith-sharing groups, and as a member of the Knights of Columbus. When his sons were younger, he was active in the Boy Scouts and later as a band dad. Dick remained active throughout his life, and that did not change when he moved to Sarah Reed Senior Living. There he joined the choir, participated in every and any activity, including afternoon game time, bingo, and Friday night movies, and enjoyed socializing, especially with his cafeteria table friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Karen (Martyna) Miehl, a daughter-in-law, Jody Miehl, a brother, Edward Miehl and a sister, Mary Miehl.

He is survived by his sons, Gabriel Miehl, wife Amy of Erie, and Nickolaus Miehl of Salem, Oregon, grandchildren Davin, Ellery, Freya, and Zayda Miehl; siblings David Miehl, wife Diane, Timothy Miehl, wife Patty, Rosemarie Lester, husband Jim, Daniel Miehl, wife Annette, Joann Miller-Miehl, Tony Miehl, and a sister-in-law Eileen Miehl. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Friends are invited to call on Thursday, January 8th, from 4 to 7 pm at the Brugger Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1595 West 38th Street. A funeral mass will be held at Sacred Heart Church on Friday, January 9th at 11:00 am. Burial will be private in Erie Cemetery.
