Cumberland - George H. "Mac" McAllister, Jr., 98, of Bishop Drive, died Saturday, January 3, 2026 at HopeHealth Hulitar Hospice Center, Providence. He was the loving husband of the late Althea (Matthews) McAllister and the late Nancy R. (Johnson) Peterson.
Born in Providence, a son of the late George H. and Hildegarde E. (Meyer) McAllister, he was a graduate of Pawtucket West High School and resided in Cumberland for most of his life.
Mr. McAllister worked as a stereotyper and in the photo lab for the Providence Journal in their Circulation Department before retiring in 1991. He served as a vice president of the RI Chapter of the New England Allied Printing Trades Association and was a treasurer of the Stereotypers, Local 53.
Mac served as a special police officer for Lincoln Police Department and later with the Cumberland Police Department, and was a past president of the Cumberland FOPA and Lincoln FOPA.
He enjoyed hockey, and was a member of the Rhody Oldies Hockey Club and the Woonsocket Old Timers Hockey Association. For many years, he coached Cumberland Youth Hockey and NRI Vikings Youth Hockey. He was active with the Boy Scouts, serving as Assistant Scoutmaster for Troop 1 Arnold Mills, as committeeman for Troop 2, Lonsdale, and as Unit Commissioner of the Blackstone Valley Boy Scouts. For his service to scouting in Rhode Island, he was bestowed the honor of Knight of Yawgoog.
Mac was a parishioner of Christ Church, Lincoln, and the former Church of the Advent, Pawtucket, where he served on the vestry of both churches. He was a member of Mount Moriah Lodge #8, F. & A.M., Lincoln, and the Gaspee Order #99, Swords of Bunker Hill.
A U.S. Army veteran, he served during peacetime following World War II, and was a member of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla, and was a past Flotilla Commander and Division 8 Captain. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans.
He is survived by one daughter, Beth Thornley (Jim) of Cumberland; one son, Scott C. McAllister of Cumberland; one sister, Joyce Harrison of Florida; two granddaughters, Nicole Beverly (Bryan) and Jayme Novak (Nick); and two great granddaughters, Ava Beverly and Lillian Novak. He was the father of the late Kendrick "Ricky" McAllister.
His funeral will be held Friday, January 9, 2026 at 9:00 AM from Bellows Funeral Chapel, 160 River Road, Lincoln, with a Requiem Eucharist at 10:00 AM in Christ Church, 1643 Lonsdale Avenue, Lincoln. Burial with military honors will follow in Highland Memorial Park, Johnston. Family and friends are invited, and may attend visiting hours on Thursday from 4:00 - 7:00 PM with a Masonic Memorial Service at 6:30 PM.
