Thomas Bruce Embrey Obituary

We are gathered here to remember and celebrate the life of a remarkable man, Thomas Embrey, born on December 2, 1941, in Westernport, MD. Thomas to his friends and family, led a life full of adventure, courage, and unyielding love for his family. He was a true American hero, having served courageously as an E-5 Sgt in the US Army in Vietnam and Korea.  He retired in 1979.  A man of integrity, he was admired and respected by all who had the honor of knowing him.

Thomas made Elgin, South Carolina his home, where he lived out his retirement years.  He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He was a loyal husband, devoted father, and an irreplaceable friend. His courage was not just evidenced through his military service, but through the way he lived his daily life, facing challenges with a strong will and an unwavering smile.  He always enjoyed helping others and working at the Bishops Store House.

Thomas loved traveling the roads as a truck driver and enjoyed working with his hands, doing mechanical work of trucks, tractors and tinkering with small engines.  He had a wonderful sense of humor.

Thomas is survived by his loving wife of 29 years, Gaynelle Pixley Embrey, who stood by his side through thick and thin, sharing in his adventures, his joys, and his sorrows. He also leaves behind his sons, Timothy Bryant Embrey, Bryan McMichael, and Jeffrey McMichael; brother, John Embrey; sisters, Catherine Hartman, Roberta Taornina, and Ella Jean Branch (Frank); 5 grandchildren; and 3 great-grandchildren.  Thomas also helped raise his nieces, Denise Dixon and Deborah Quidley while their family went through some difficult times.

His parents, Bruce and Mary Embrey, preceded him in death along with a son, Thomas B. Embrey, Jr.; brother, Bob Jones; and sisters, Sally Carrico and Vivian Deaszo.

Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, January 13, 2026 at 11:30 am at Powers Funeral Home, Lugoff, with burial to follow in Fort Jackson National Cemetery.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
