Joan M. Clampitt, 95, of Indianapolis, Indiana, passed away peacefully on January 3, 2026.
She was born on September 16, 1930, in Indianapolis, Indiana, to the late Emmett J. and Pauline E. (Probst) O'Brien. A proud graduate of Southport High School, Joan remained active with the Southport High School Alumni Association and cherished the friendships and memories made during those years. She was also a dedicated member of the Telephone Pioneers, reflecting her commitment to both her profession and service to others.
Joan's life was deeply rooted in faith. A devoted member of Southport Church of the Nazarene, her relationship with God and lifelong faith in Christ were the foundation of her life. As long as the family can remember, she has always been described by others as "such a sweet person."
She delighted in the simple joys of life—spending time with her family, tending to her flower garden, and watching birds in her yard. An enthusiastic fan of Indiana sports, Joan was a diehard Indianapolis Colts fan, having traveled to watch playoff games in earlier years. Her last writing was of current player names she could remember. She loved the Indiana Pacers and the excitement of the Indy 500 with great passion. She would have loved watching IU finish this year's football season.
Joan leaves behind to treasure her memory her daughters, Kerra K. Southards and Sally A. Ray; her sons, Cort Clampitt and William Eugene Clampitt; fifteen grandchildren; and eleven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, a grandson, and her former husband, Norman Eugene Clampitt, who passed away in 2010.
Family and friends are invited to gather to honor her memory, share stories, and celebrate a life well-lived from 1:30 p.m. until the time of the service at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, January 10, 2026, at G. H. Herrmann Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 5141 Madison Avenue, Indianapolis. She will be laid to rest at Round Hill Cemetery.
Joan will be remembered for her warmth, unwavering faith, and the love she generously gave to all who knew her.
Though her hands are at rest, her legacy lives on in every smile she inspired and every life she touched.
The family invites those who knew Joan to share their memories, photographs, and condolences online, helping to honor her legacy and keep her memory alive.
