Salvatore “Sal” Papa, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and master craftsman, passed away peacefully on January 3, 2026, at the age of 85, in Brick, New Jersey. Born on August 12, 1940, in Brooklyn, New York, Sal’s early years were marked by a passion for building and creating—a talent that would define his life’s work. A consummate family man, Sal lived by values of integrity, dedication, and love, which his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren can only hope to emulate.
Sal attended Brooklyn Technical High School, where he received a top-tier engineering education that laid the foundation for his future endeavors. His time at Brooklyn Tech was not only academically formative but also instrumental in shaping his lifelong love for craftsmanship and his unwavering work ethic. After graduation, Sal leveraged his education and skills into a highly successful career in construction, becoming a respected expert in
every facet of the industry. Over the course of his career, he worked on numerous notable projects throughout New York City, including career-defining work for institutions and brands such as NYU and Stella McCartney, among many others.
A talented general contractor and master cabinet maker, Sal eventually founded his own company, Merchant Equipment, which quickly earned a reputation for exceptional workmanship, reliability, and Sal’s personal integrity. His pride in his craft was evident in everything he built and every relationship he formed through his work. Outside of his professional life, Sal was a world traveler, a devoted historian, and a die-hard New York Yankees fan—even during the years when the Dodgers still played in Brooklyn.
Sal’s devotion to his family was unparalleled. He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Julie Papa, his partner in every sense of the word. Together, they raised two sons: Ernie Papa and his wife Debbie, and Vincent Papa and his wife Donna. Sal also leaves behind seven loving grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces & great-nephews, all of whom were a constant source of pride and joy in his life.
