Mr. Richard Reed entered this world in Decatur on March 13, 1941, a quiet blessing whose presence would touch many lives. On January 3, 2026, he gently slipped from this earthly home and into eternal rest at Decatur Morgan Hospital, leaving behind a legacy woven with strength, dignity, and love. A proud graduate of Lakeside High School, Class of 1959, Richard carried the spirit of perseverance wherever life led him. He served his country with honor as a member of the U.S. Army, and later, with steady hands and unwavering dedication, he worked as a welder at Ingall’s Shipyard. His life was shaped by hard work, humility, and a deep sense of responsibility. At an early age, Richard joined Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church,
planting his faith in rich soil that nurtured him throughout his journey. His quiet devotion, gentle spirit, and steady presence were a comfort to all who knew him. Richard now joins the loved ones who went before him—his mother, Carrie Sanders Matthews; father, Willie Reed Sr.; sisters, Mollie Mae Woods, Elnater Woods Malone, and Janie Hill; brothers, Willie Reed Jr. and Robert Reed; and his son, Christopher Earl Reed. Their reunion is surely filled with joy. He leaves behind a circle of love that will forever carry his memory: his devoted son, Stephon Harper of Decatur; his brother, Ellie Matthews Jr. (Gladys); and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, and friends whose hearts were shaped by his kindness. Though he has stepped into eternity, the imprint of his life remains—felt in the stories shared, the lessons remembered, and the love that continues to echo through every life he touched.
