Mary Suzanne "Sue" Bensel Obituary

Mary Suzanne Bensel, affectionately known as “Sue,” peacefully departed this life on January 3, 2026, at the age of 92 after a brief illness. Born on November 26, 1933, in Atlantic City, New Jersey, Sue’s vibrant spirit shone brightly throughout her life, embodying the warmth and resilience that her loved ones will forever cherish.

Sue was a proud graduate of Atlantic City High School and soon after, she met her beloved husband, John Bensel. Together, they nurtured a beautiful family, relocating to Mercerville in 1972 and later enjoying retirement in the serene Four Seasons community of Columbus, which they called home since 1999.

Sue dedicated much of her career as an administrative assistant at esteemed companies such as McGraw Hill, RCA Astro (GE Astro), and, ultimately, at NEC Labs in Princeton until her retirement in 2000. A steadfast member of Our Lady of Sorrows-St. Anthony Parish, Sue’s unwavering faith was a guiding light in her life.

An avid volunteer at the Burlington County Public Library, Sue’s generous spirit shone through as she dedicated over 500 hours to sharing her love for reading and community service. A true artist at heart, she found joy and relaxation in painting with oils and watercolors, capturing the beauty of life around her. Her love for the Jersey Shore remained a constant source of pride, with memories of her upbringing in Atlantic City lovingly reflected in her home. Sue could often be found watching the Game Show Network which was one of her favorite channels.

Sue was predeceased by her parents, Michael and Mary C. (Fernan) Whitty; her sister, Patricia Coscia; step-sister, Wynnefred Franklin; and step-brother, Thomas Whitty. She leaves behind an enduring legacy: her devoted husband of 66 years, John M. Bensel, Sr. of Columbus; their cherished children, daughter, Kathleen S. Bensel of Robbinsville; son and daughter-in-law, John M., Jr., and Jacki Bensel of Hamilton; her beloved sister, June Hall of Philadelphia, PA; her two adoring grandchildren, Caitlin Bensel of Birmingham, AL, and Joshua Bensel of Allentown, NJ; and her precious great-granddaughter, Lia Bensel of Allentown, NJ, along with many loving nieces and nephews.

In honor of Sue’s joyful spirit and unwavering faith, family and friends will gather to celebrate her life.

Visitation for family and friends will be held on Thursday, January 8, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. at Our Lady of Sorrows-St. Anthony Parish, Our Lady of Sorrows Church, 3816 East State Street Extension, Hamilton, NJ followed by a Mass of Christian Burial being celebrated at 11:00 a.m.

Entombment will follow on Friday, January 9, 2026, at 1:00 p.m., at Holy Cross Cemetery and Mausoleum, Mays Landing, NJ.

In lieu of flowers, the family invites those wishing to honor Sue’s memory to make a contribution to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital by visiting (https://www.stjude.org/) or a charity of the donor’s choice, reflecting her compassionate spirit and commitment to bringing hope to others.
