Sr. Ann Veronica Bivona, RSM Obituary

In Loving Memory of Sister Ann Veronica Bivona, RSM

July 10, 1940 - January 3, 2026

Sister Ann Veronica Bivona, RSM, peacefully passed away on January 3, 2026, at the age of 85. Born in New York City, she was the cherished daughter of the late John and Nora (McDonnell) Bivona and the beloved sister of the late Mary J. Bivona. Sister Ann was also a loving niece and cousin, remembered fondly by many family members, including those who have preceded her in death.

As the longest-serving member of the Board of Trustees at St. Catharine Academy, Sister Ann Veronica dedicated over six decades to the education of students across New York City, making a profound impact on many lives. Reflecting on her journey as a Sister of Mercy, she stated, "My journey has been the greatest blessing in my life. The charism of Mercy, inspired by Mother Catherine McAuley, motivates me to embrace our merciful God and make Him known and loved."

Sister Ann Veronica's commitment shone brightly during every board meeting and her efforts ensured that the tenets of Mercy remained at the forefront of St. Catharine's mission. Her dedication to providing affordable Catholic education in the Bronx was unwavering.

She began her teaching career at Good Shepherd School in Manhattan, where she taught middle school students for 14 transformative years. Later, as principal of St. Margaret Mary School in the South Bronx—the poorest Congressional District in the nation—she served God's beautiful children from Pre-K to 8th grade for 40 memorable years.

Her leadership extended beyond the classroom. As a member of the 125th Anniversary Committee, Sister Ann Veronica tirelessly worked for over two years to curate events celebrating the unique spirit of St. Catharine's, including a gala and a Mass at St. Patrick's Cathedral that honored the achievements of alumnae and the community.

Having professed her vows with the Sisters of Mercy in 1963, Sister Ann embraced a life dedicated to serving the poor, sick, and uneducated. She expressed her commitment through daily prayer and a generous love for others, embodying the values of her vocation.

Sister Ann Veronica Bivona leaves behind a legacy of kindness, compassion, and dedication to education. Her remarkable life serves as an inspiration to all who had the honor of knowing her.

May she rest in peace.
