Sister Catherine Horan, SNDdeN, went peacefully home to her good God on January 3, 2026, at St. Julie Billiart Residential Care Center in Ipswich, Massachusetts. She was born Joan Catherine Horan in Miami Beach, Florida, to Thomas and Catherine (Alderdice) Horan.
She entered the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur on August 11, 1957, making First Vows in 1960 and Perpetual Vows in 1965. Sr. Catherine earned a B.S. in Physics from Trinity College, an M.T.S. in Mathematics from The Catholic University of America and an MBA from Loyola College.
A gifted educator and administrator, Sr. Catherine taught at St. Camillus School in Silver Spring, MD, Notre Dame Academies in Philadelphia and Washington, DC, and Trinity Preparatory School in Ilchester, MD. She also served in both local and international leadership in the Congregation. Sr. Catherine ministered faithfully with homeless women for 15 years at St. Peter Shelter and the House of Ruth in Washington, DC. She also spent many years in Kenya, working with disabled children and helping people establish small businesses.
Sr. Catherine often said, “I am because you are,” an African proverb that reflected the way she lived—leaving a piece of her heart in every ministry she served.
In her retirement, Sr. Catherine remained active in service to the poor and continued to be a vital presence in community life. She brought joy and fun through organizing parties for watching the Kentucky, Pimlico, and Belmont horse races, and her careful attention to detail always gave life and energy to the community.
Sr. Catherine was predeceased by her beloved cousin, Mary Lou Fetchko. She is survived by her cousins, Sally Anne Austin, Nancy Koeller and Sister Loreta Jordan, SNDdeN, as well as her Sisters and Associates in the Notre Dame community, her many friends and the devoted staff of the St. Julie Billiart Residential Care Center.
A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated Thursday, January 8 at 10:30 am at Our Lady Queen Chapel in Ipswich, MA, preceded by a wake and sharing of memories at 9:00am in the chapel. Burial will be later in Illchester, MD.
Memorial Donations may be made to the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, 351 Broadway, Everett, MA 02149. The Conway Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn Street, Peabody, MA is directing arrangements
