Robert Thomas Flournoy was born December 4, 1946 in Minden, Louisiana to the late James and Estelle Flournoy. Robert was called home to be with the Lord on November 12, 2025. He was preceded in death by his sister, Reba Nell Flournoy; brother, Arthur James Flournoy; daughter, Aundrea Nicole Flournoy; father, James Young Flournoy; mother, Estelle (Dixon) Flournoy; and cousin (who he viewed as "my brother"), Carlos Flournoy.
Robert, affectionately known to others as Rob, Bob, (Mr.) Bobby, Daddy and PawPaw, loved God, his family (near and far), working hard, playing hard, and socializing with anyone and everyone he met. He enjoyed sharing diverse stories and anecdotes and testifying to the goodness of the Lord. Robert also had a love for sports (especially basketball and football); gardening, landscaping and farming; and music (e.g., singing, "rapping," dancing, and playing the piano and guitar over the years, sometimes as part of a band).
Robert completed high school in Louisiana and enlisted in the military soon after. He began serving in the United States Army in 1966. While on active duty, Robert served as a communications specialist and fought in the Vietnam War (SP4). He earned multiple service medals and achieved expert status. Robert went on to serve in the United States Army Reserve, during which time, he was a military police officer. He also worked as a laborer at Duriron Company, Inc. Upon being honorably discharged from the military, Robert began working at Daimler Chrysler/Behr America in Dayton, Ohio (now known as Mahle), where he earned full retirement after 24 years of service. Despite raising a family and working full-time hours at Chrysler/Behr, sometimes up to 80 hours per week during his tenure, Robert earned his Associate of Applied Science degree (Procurement and Materials Management major) from Sinclair Community College (located in Dayton, Ohio) in 1986. Following his first retirement in 2007, Robert briefly worked for Product Action and the United States Postal Service before transitioning to employment at Wilberforce University. He also worked at the Charles Young Buffalo Soldiers National Monument via the National Park Service in Wilberforce, Ohio, from which he entered into his second retirement in 2017 after earning Most Dedicated Faculty and Humanitarian Awards.
Robert was a very loving, God-fearing, lively and hardworking man throughout his life. He leaves to cherish his memory his daughters: Shela Flournoy, LaShonda (Flournoy) Waters, Antonia Flournoy, Tamika Flournoy, and Sherria Flournoy; grandchildren: India Turner (Husband - Jazmen Turner), Bryanna Curry, Anayshia Coates, Elijah Waters, Jahmai Waters, Jeremiah Edwards, Joshua Edwards, Jr., Nehemiah Waters, Josiah Edwards, and Antonio Flournoy-Byrd; great-grandchildren: I'Yanna Johnson, Jazelle Turner, Journie Brown, Jaxzen Turner, Keh’zia Herrera, and Ezrah Herrera; Jean (Woodfork) Flournoy; Sherry Strickland; and a host of other relatives, friends and colleagues.
