William L. (Bill) Shackelford, age 83, of Carrollton, went home to be with our Heavenly Father on Friday, November 14, 2025, at Jersey Community Hospital. Bill was born on August 5, 1942, in Greene County, Carrollton, IL, to Lynn and Helen Shackelford. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Lynda Brooks Nolan.

Bill is survived by his brother, Michael (Paula) Shackelford of Woodstock, GA.; his nieces, Kathy (Travis) Wilson of Marietta, GA, Jama Shackelford of Woodstock, GA, Carol Payne of Jacksonville, IL, Brenda Steinacher of Manchester, IL and Debbra Bassett of Louisville, KY. He is also survived by many great nieces, nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews.

As a boy, he was always a hard worker, mowing lawns with his brother in the summer and shoveling snow in the winter for his neighbors. Bill’s custodial- maintenance career for 43 years was focused on keeping Boyd Memorial Hospital in tip-top shape, making sure the lights were working, the operating rooms were spotless and sterile, raising, and retiring the flag each day. After retirement, Bill continued to volunteer his time at the hospital, doing various errands and tasks, such as going to the bank for change needed for cafeteria operations.

Bill loved to travel and visited such places as Hawaii, Mexico, Canada, the Caribbean Islands, Alaska, Western US and New England. His sister and nephews were frequently his guests on these trips. For many years, Bill collected stamps, antique beer steins and game plates.

At lunch Monday -Friday, you could always find Bill at the Senior Citizens Center in Carrollton. Bill led the group in The Lord’s Prayer before the meal and engaged in active fellowship with his friends, solving the world’s problems.

Bill was a faithful member of Believers Baptist Church for many years. He assisted with various duties such as usher and participated in many prayer services. He especially enjoyed the fellowship events and did his best to attend every one.

Bill's Celebration of Life service will be Saturday, January 17, 2026 at 11:30 pm at Believers Baptist Church, 272 Woody Road, Carrollton, IL. Friends and family are invited to a reception luncheon at the church following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Believers Baptist Church.
